Surtsey · An island built and eroded
1963–1967 eruptions and later observations · modern location on map
Interpretive landscape based on post-eruption Surtsey; not a photograph or survey reproducing its birth in 1963, an exact annual shoreline or a particular vegetation plot.
Surtsey, south of Iceland, formed during eruptions in 1963–1967. Waves eroded its coast, some loose volcanic material became consolidated tuff, and plants reached the new land.
