Conus marmoreus

Conus marmoreus

Overview

Conus marmoreus is a cone snail with a striking dark network of markings on a white background. It is a marine snail living inside a conical shell. Both its beautiful outer pattern and its life feeding on other snails make it intriguing.[1]

Key facts

Some snails eat other snails. This species feeds on various gastropods, including cone snails. Inside the seemingly quiet cone-shaped shell lives an animal that hunts other molluscs.[1]

Time and place

This Indo-Pacific cone snail is still alive today. An institutional species account describes its distribution as extending from India to the Marshall Islands and Fiji. It is known from shallow water around coral reefs and lagoons.[1]

The time range describes source context, not the complete duration of this species.

Size, form and skeleton

The species account gives a usual shell length of about 5–15 cm. The shell is conical, with variation in the shoulder nodules and the height of the upper portion. Dark net-like lines and triangular or diamond-shaped dark markings surround white, tent-shaped areas.[1]

Habitat and reproduction

It is generally known from reef bottoms and lagoons at depths of about 1–15 m. It occupies coral rubble, sand, spaces beneath rocks and areas among seaweed. It feeds on other snails, and its egg size has also been used to study its larval stage in seawater.[1]

Fossil discovery

Linnaeus named the species in 1758. Institutional species accounts now bring together its name, distribution, shell and natural-history records. It is an example of ecological observations from many regions accumulating around an old taxonomic name.[1]

Research questions

Do different patterns and sizes always indicate different species? The account compares the small size and varied patterns of individuals from New Caledonia. It illustrates the study of biological variation through both shell form and regional differences.[1]

Observation

Move your gaze from the shoulder of the conical shell to the dark network of lines and white areas. Finally, follow the opening toward the lower end to examine the pattern alongside the shell's three-dimensional structure.[1]
