Scelidosaurus harrisonii

Overview

Scelidosaurus harrisonii is an early dinosaur with bony armor on its neck, trunk, and tail. Rows of plates extend along a quadrupedal body with a small beak. It is a useful animal for exploring how armored dinosaur bodies were organized.[2][3][4]

Key facts

The armor was not arranged in the same way across the entire body. Different patterns are described on the neck, back and sides of the trunk, and tail. Following the direction of rows rather than a single plate makes body organization clearer.[3]

Time and place

It is known from Early Jurassic discoveries in the Charmouth area of present-day Dorset, England. The material is associated with the late Sinemurian, around 190 million years ago. Its head and body can be compared with those of later, diverse armored dinosaurs.[4][2]

The time range describes source context, not the complete duration of this species.

Size, form and skeleton

Features include a small front beak, horny structures covering the head, and rows of bony plates along the body. The hand has five fingers, with claws described on the first three. A museum genus account gives a body length of approximately 4 m.[2][1][4]

Habitat and reproduction

Museums present it as a plant-eating armored dinosaur. Its small beak, hands and feet, and body-covering plates can be examined together. Compare the arrangement of feeding structures in the head, supporting limbs, and armor.[4][2]

Fossil discovery

Studies published in 2020 examined the skull, postcranial skeleton, and dermal bony armor separately in detail. Studying several regions of the same dinosaur reveals different fine features. Skeleton and external armor together describe an early armored dinosaur.[2][1][3]

Research questions

What rows of plates covered an early armored dinosaur? Compare their arrangement on the neck, trunk, and tail side by side. Including the head, hands, and feet helps explore how conspicuous armor connected with other body regions.[3][2][1]

Observation

Follow the direction of plate rows from the neck along the back to the tail. Distinguish the side rows as well, then examine the small beak and forefeet to picture the body beneath the armor.[3][2][1]
